Some people have asked me if game birds were also victimized by windfarms. In spite of the hushing of evidence on the hot topic of birds killed by wind turbines, I was able to find the following: IN SCOTLAND: "they (red grouse) have been known to collide with turbine structures and have shown population declines associated with windfarm developments elsewhere" This is a quote from RSPB letter dated 25.4.02 available here: www.iberica2000.org/documents/eolica/edinbane/Letter_RSPB_25_4_02.pdf - Page 4, "Wader and red grouse interest" IN GERMANY: See the following document: www.iberica2000.org/documents/eolica/casual_bird_mortality_record_germany.xls which shows the following game species were found to have been killed by wind turbines: geese, duck, partridge, pheasant, and more (not sure if geese are considered "game" in Germany. Swans have been found as well: 9 of them; and 4 storks. These are only samples, for no systematic searches were ever performed, that I know of. I am told a more comprehensive report will be ready by year-end (2004). IN THE US: "Horned larks comprised 47% of the fatalities, ring-necked pheasants comprised 14% of the fatalities and western meadowlarks comprised 6% of the fatalities." This is a quote from page 2 of the following report: www.iberica2000.org/documents/eolica/Nine_canyon_monitoring_final.pdf IN SPAIN: Dr. Lekuona lists the victimised species on page 94 of his report. Phasianus colchicus, columba palumbus etc. are among the bodies that were found before foxes, wild boars, wild cats, badgers and feral cats would snatch them away. Foxes and boars have reached the proportions of a plague in Spain.
